My New Book Bin

Back in 2012 my friend Darcy drove me to Clarenville Public Library where we loaded fifty cartons of Discards into his son’s truck and hauled them back to Bonavista.

One thousand books. They were stacked three deep in the shelves in my guest room.

That’s a lot of books.

There aren’t many of them left. So it is time for another trip to The Clarenville Public Library

And I know that I will need a bigger book bin.

This week will see the bin caulked (to work towards making it moisture-proof) and painted.

For a while there I lost monentum with my new book bin

I painted it with three coats to improve the chance of it being sealed and weather-proof, but did not get around to installing it before winter. Now the days are growing shorter and it is still not operational.

I have been worried about the sail-area, and the bin being blown over by our string winds, especially the northerlies.

So: two of my trees at the front provide a 68” gap. I can fix horixontal rails of 2x4 across the trunks, and that should provide decent horizontal support.

Then I can build a base into which the bottom of the new bin sits.

I want to lower shelf to be childrens/youth books, so the base should be 24” or 30” off the ground. A lower base meansd a lower sail-profile.

Then I will need a means of strapping the bookcase to those two 2x4 rails.

The cabinte is 49”x13.5”, but don’t quote me on that.
